1. Bastia, Corsica
Stay
About the destination: Bastia is a lively and cultural city in Corsica, as well as its business and financial center. It was the capital of the Genoese administration of Corsica until the mid-18th century and has preserved the architecture and atmosphere of that time, giving it a rugged, unrefined charm. Yet Bastia is undeniably Mediterranean. The old quarter, known as Terra Vecchia, is full of charming streets, small boutiques, and flamboyant Baroque churches. Highlights include the 15th-century Oratoire St. Roch, with its rich Baroque interior and impressive organ, and Corsica’s largest church, the 17th-century Saint-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral. Nearby, Place du Marché hosts a lively flea market every weekend. The area around the Citadelle, the Terra Nova neighborhood, is one of the most colorful parts of town, with restored houses and mansions ideal for wandering. From the once-grand gardens of the Governors’ Palace, Jardin Romieu, you can enjoy views over the Vieux Port, the Old Port, a picturesque marina framed by tall, time-worn buildings and filled with elegant yachts. As Corsica’s most successful commercial town, Bastia is a vibrant and charming destination, offering a beautiful port, distinctive architecture, excellent restaurants, and a rich cultural calendar. Bastia is much more than just sun and sand.

3. Ajaccio, Corsica
Stay
About the destination: Ajaccio is the capital of the French Mediterranean island of Corsica, located on the island’s west coast. It is famous as the birthplace of Emperor Napoleon, and his presence is felt everywhere: streets, squares, buildings, restaurants, and more are named after him throughout the city. Napoleon, in turn, left his mark on Ajaccio by gifting it its first sewer system, planting eucalyptus trees to drain marshy areas, and making Ajaccio the capital of Corsica. Ajaccio’s center is compact and easy to explore on foot. The main shopping street is Rue du Cardinal Fesch, which also hosts a museum displaying the painting collection amassed by Cardinal Joseph Fesch. Next to the museum is the Imperial Chapel, built around 1860, which holds the tombs of Fesch as well as Napoleon’s parents. At the end of the street you reach Place Foch, home to the town hall. Located in the heart of the old town and once the site of the medieval gate, this charming square is lined with cafés and restaurants and features a statue of Napoleon as First Consul standing above the Four Lions Fountain. Beyond Place Foch you’ll find the cathedral and Napoleon’s birthplace, now a museum. The Cathedral of La Madonuccia, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, was built at the end of the 16th century. Its main altar was gifted to the city by Elisa Baciocchi, Napoleon’s sister, who was baptized there in 1771. Ajaccio is a small city with a big heart and a strong sense of authenticity. Nature is never far away, and if you slow down and soak in the relaxed Mediterranean atmosphere, you may well find yourself enchanted.

5. Porto-Vecchio, Corsica
Stay
About the destination: Porto-Vecchio, often called the “St-Tropez of Corsica,” blends an elegant marina atmosphere with rugged Mediterranean scenery. Centered around a 16th-century Genoese citadel, the old town sits on a hill above a sparkling natural harbor. Narrow lanes lined with stone houses, small shops, and café terraces create an intimate feel—especially in the evening, when the ramparts glow with warm light and live music drifts into the squares. Below the citadel, the busy marina is the social hub of Porto-Vecchio. Yachts and fishing boats share the water, while waterfront bars and restaurants serve fresh seafood, Corsican cured meats, and local wines. It’s ideal for a slow sunset stroll or a relaxed dinner overlooking the masts and reflections on the bay. Just a short drive away, some of Corsica’s most celebrated beaches await. Palombaggia charms visitors with its arc of fine white sand, pink granite rocks, and clear turquoise water, while Santa Giulia offers a sheltered lagoon perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, and families. Slightly wilder coves like Tamaricciu and Cala Rossa reward those who venture a bit farther along the coast. If you want a break from the sea, the inland landscapes offer pine forests, rivers, and mountains. Day trips to the Ospedale Forest bring cooler air, sweeping views over the gulf, and hiking trails that range from easy walks to more challenging routes. Whether you’re after beachside relaxation, outdoor adventure, or Corsican food and nightlife, Porto-Vecchio is a compact base that highlights the island’s many charms.
